An LBD (Little Black Dress), or a formal top over black slacks. Classic pumps, preferably black, and a small purse. For hair, just make sure it's "tidy", whether it's done up or down. Make sure you wear earrings, and maybe a bracelet OR necklace, but not both. Good luck, and Merry Christmas!

鈥淏usiness Formal鈥?is much easier to define for men that it is for women. For men, it simply means a dark business suit, dress shirt worn with a silk tie, and dress shoes. It can include a French cuff shirt worn with cuff links as well.

For women, business formal features a skirted suit worn with hosiery and pumps (closed toe/heel shoes). As you know, fashion offers women many choices when it comes to suit kinds of looks. It鈥檚 puzzling that the invitation asks for this category of attire when the event includes a dinner dance. Holiday dance invitations usually suggest semi-formal attire, which for women is dressy but not as tailored as business-formal apparel. Because Business-Formal attire and Semi-Formal attire is the same for men, I can only surmise that the hosts do not want women to wear ultra sexy, slinky, skin-baring outfits. This would not be wise anyway, as this is a work-related event.

Because it is a holiday dinner dance, I advise you to dress in a businesslike version of semi-formal fashions. Whichever outfit you choose to wear, stay within these guidelines for business-formal attire:

* Wear long sleeves

* Wear no garments that are too short, too tight, or so low cut that cleavage shows

* Avoid strappy holiday sandals that ask to be worn without hosiery

* Wear dressy pumps with appropriate hosiery (legwear with a slight sparkle is appropriate for an evening dinner dance).

Within those parameters, you can wear a more festive look than what we normally think of as daytime 鈥淏usiness Formal鈥?for women. A dressy dinner suit (long or short skirt) or an outfit that includes a velvet or satin jacket would be appropriate. For a simpler look, you could wear a black business suit (made of fine wool or a blend, not cotton) and dress it up by wearing a lace or sparkly top as the layering piece underneath the jacket (a festive top that is not see through or low cut).

For other specific semi-formal-outfit ideas, peruse some of the other Bluesuitmom.com Q/As that I have recently written on what semi-formal attire entails for women. Just be sure to follow those guidelines above to comply with what the hosts have requested.

Everything conservative and smart, as if you're going to a job interview. A dark color of suit - jacket and skirt or jacket and pants, - matching or black shoes and purse, a button-up blouse under the suit and discreet jewelry such as diamante ear studs or a small pin on the lapel of the jacket. It's fine to wear a necklace as well, but no more than three items of jewelry, max. Make-up should be minimal and restrained - no sparkly eyeshadow or glittery lip gloss. You can do your hair any way you like - up or down - as long as it looks sleek and neat - no strands hanging over your face, because you have to look busineslike. Hope you enjoy yourself!

I sent one of my clients to her Business formal party in black straight leg trouser, a beautiful white silk shirt (which swirled in front with a fabric criss cross..bought it at Le Chateau) and black vintage-looking jewelry (necklace..which filled her whole neck, short pendant earrings, and bracelet) she had a black satin clutch (a long one) and black stilettos with red sole (Christian Louboutin-look alike), her hair was up in a messy updo with a gorgeous vintage broach pinned in the back of her chignon and gorgeous red lips...No need to tell you that she turned heads!!! Look business like but don't forget that it is a party..not a job interview!!

i would wear a classy looking 1 piece dress and matching colored high heels...and style ur hair up or curl if it isnt already, and wear a simple looking yet elegant necklace. like a silver necklace with some stone or something. no rings or bracelets or any of that sh*t...makes u look cheap and gaudy! unless theyre worth in the thousands or higher! ;-) have funnnnnnn!
