I need help with layered hair! I'm a guy?

I want this hairstyle because I have to go to a formal place in a few days and I have long hair but it's messy. I found this style and it looks neat and clean for long hair:

Apparently he has layered hair which is why he can do it. What does that mean? If I want layered hair what do I tell the hair dresser when I go to get it cut? how long should my hair be for those styles?

Bring a picture in to your appt. with the hairstylist. And tell her that is the look you want. But remember, that everybodys hair is different, and even tho she may be able to cut your hair like his, there is no guarantee that it will come out looking like his.

I think you should just shave it off. It looks cleaner that way.
